J.C. Chandor - Producer / Writer / Director

J.C. Chandor was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut feature film MARGIN CALL, which he also directed. The film has a star-studded ensemble cast and was awarded ‘Best Directorial Debut’ by The National Board of Review, ‘Breakthrough Director’ by the New York Film Critics Circle, ‘Best Original Screenplay’ by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, and won an Australian Academy Award for ‘Best Screenplay.’ The film received the ‘Best First Feature Award’ as well as the ‘Robert Altman Award’ at the Independent Spirit Awards and was named one of the top 10 films of the year in publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, New York Post, and The Huffington Post. 

Chandor premiered his second film ALL IS LOST, starring Robert Redford at the Cannes Film Festival. It was released universal critical acclaim. The film went on to collect many accolades including ‘Best Actor’ by the New York Film Critics Circle, won a Golden Globe for ‘Best Original Score,’ nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA, two Golden Globes, and four Independent Spirit Awards including, ‘Best Picture,’ ‘Best Director,’ and ‘Best Actor.’ It appeared on several top ten lists that year, including the New York Times, the Hollywood Reporter, Chicago-Sun Times, and the Washington Post. It was called a “career-defining” performance for Robert Redford. NPR described it as “calling back to Redford's rugged '70s turn in Sydney Pollack's Jeremiah Johnson.” 

Chandor’s third film A MOST VIOLENT YEAR starred Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain and received critical acclaim with many critics comparing the film favorably to the work of Sidney Lumet and praising the performances of Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. It was awarded “Best Picture” by the National Board of Review. The New Yorker described it as, “something startling… an anti-‘Godfather.’” It made many top ten lists that year, including the Atlantic, the Hollywood Reporter, the LA Times, Chicago Sun-Times, and the New Yorker. 

Chandor’s fourth film, the action-adventure tale TRIPLE FRONTIER, stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal, and Adria Arjona. The film was shot in Hawaii, California, and in Bogota, Colombia with cinematographer Roman Vasyanov. Netflix distributes the film globally.

He currently has feature film and television projects in development with Warner Brothers Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, A24, Plan B, Keshet, Gaumont Television, and Amazon Studios, both as a writer/director and as a producer with Chandor’s production company with producing partners Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb: CounterNarrative Films. Chandor holds a bachelor’s degree in American Studies and Film Studies from The College of Wooster in Ohio and studied film production at New York University. He grew up in the suburbs of New York City and London, England, and currently lives outside New York with his wife, painter Cameron Goodyear, and their two children.
